Bornemann becomes a digital place

Delligser company honoured by the state / Development of smart threads

Looking to the future, the Delligen based family business Bornemann Gewindetechnik is moving forward in order to use the current coronavirus crisis to make new advances in digitalisation. According to their own statement, they want to revolutionise the industry with their “smart threads”. They promise to simplify many work steps in the areas where their components are used. The new development lies at the core of the threaded spindles, which can now be equipped with their own sensor. For example, external force and torque measurement technology from external suppliers, which is often costly, no longer needs to be installed to control processes. Time-consuming machine maintenance, which is associated with production downtime, is no longer necessary.

The Bornemann Gewindetechnik team developed the “smart thread”. Customised intelligent sensors are installed in the threaded spindles to record every interaction between the component and its environment. The data is transmitted wirelessly to an app or the company’s own networks.

Components such as pressure, rotation, position or even temperature can be measured and transmitted by the sensor, allowing conclusions to be drawn about operating errors.

On Thursday, the commitment and developer spirit of the team led by Managing Director Moritz von Soden was rewarded with the “Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen” award from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour, Transport and Digitalisation. “Digitalisation is particularly important for small companies because it is vital to their existence. It is the basis for the future. Only those who digitalise themselves and their processes will have a good future and come through the crisis well,” emphasised Digital State Secretary Stefan Muhle at the award ceremony.

Marian Köller, Managing Director of Digitalagentur Niedersachen, was also among the well-wishers. He emphasised that German SMEs have been undergoing digital transformation for quite some time. Some companies, such as Bornemann Gewindetechnik, have already made great progress. This is one of the model companies. “They tackled the topic very early and openly and consciously acted where it was worthwhile. The company is a good example of the award, a small, medium-sized business in a rural area. I am proud of this digital location in Lower Saxony,” said Köller.

The managing directors of the award-winning family business, Kathrin and Moritz von Soden, are delighted. This is the reward for the employees and the work they have done. “It’s a strength that should be used in SMEs to implement processes such as digitalisation much more quickly,” said Moritz von Soden. He travels a lot in Asia and digitalisation is much more advanced there. “If we stand still, we will sink into insignificance. That’s why we need to take a proactive approach in order to have the advantage,” said von Soden.

In his speech, State Secretary Muhle emphasised that, in his opinion, medium-sized companies have an advantage over large corporations when it comes to development and digitalisation: “Small companies simply get started. They simply want to try things out. They are faster and more agile in their implementation. They have the courage to risk failure in order to develop something perfect in the end. They are the speedboats of the economy, so to speak.”

One of these speedboats, as Muhle describes them, is in any case the Delligser family business Bornemann Gewindetechnik, whose progress on the market and in digitalisation should serve as an example to other institutions from now on through the award as “Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen”.
