Bornemann Gewindetechnik manufactures diamond threads for offshore winches
Since more than 25 years Bornemann Gewindetechnik manufactures self reversing screw shafts also known as diamond screw shafts and spooling nuts as parts for so called spooling shafts or level winders of large winches for the offshore industry.
The large winches used in the offshore industry operate in conditions under -30°C and are constantly exposed to harsh weather conditions and saltwater. On research vessels the winches then help to lift equipment with special cables from depths of up to 5.000 meter.
In order to ensure that the cables are spooled accurately a spooling device moves back and forth alongside the winch and guides the cable accordingly. This movement is realized through the diamond thread which feature a right hand and left hand thread on the same spindle. At the end of the spindle the spooling nut then automatically changes direction and moves backwards. Therefore no additional switch to reverse the rotational direction of the spooling device or level winders is required. In these harsh conditions simplicity and quality is key.
Especially the research winches on research vessels on missions in arctic environments need to endure temperatures of up to -50°C and need to be fully functional in temperatures of up to -30°C. The lifetime of the winches used on ships normally correspond to the lifetime of the ships which is approx. 30 to 40 years. Almost all German research winches in recent years have been equipped with diamond spindles of Bornemann Gewindetechnik. For reverse threads with diameters of more than 50mm Bornemann Gewindetechnik had developed its own machinery allowing an extremely efficient production process while at the same time guaranteeing exceptional quality standards.
